As some of you may have already realised, the community was suspended last night due to some kind of fubar at LiveJournal's end. We weren't the only community hit - they also hit mmom, which moonlettuce runs and on which I'm a maintainer, and I've heard of other comms and individuals affected. The community is now (obviously) unsuspended with the explanation that we'd been caught in LiveJournal's latest anti-spam measures (how that works when comms can't make comments or entries, don't ask me). However, I've just realised that the sgasesa_admin account is still suspended, and I've had to submit yet another support request for that.
Which brings me on to the point of my post (the point besides DON'T PANIC!).
Claire and I have been talking idly for a while about backing up the comm on Dreamwidth so we don't lose all of the entries if somehow LJ goes belly up or on another strikethrough rampage (like, oh, today apparently). After this morning's fubar, and the fact that it took several hours to be resolved, I was doing that more than idly, but thought that at least we had a backup of all stories on the sgasesa_admin account, right? Hahahahaha. My laugh is a bitter laugh.
When I went to check I could import to Dreamwidth and realised that the Admin account was gone, I bit the bullet and it's now done.
I realise that this isn't ideal. Ideally we'd have had a chance to warn you that it was coming, maybe even offer an opt-out, but I didn't want to risk the comm disappearing again and being unable to retrieve anything I don't have saved to my hard drive or to my e-mail account. And even saved to my hard drive and e-mail account, the idea of recoding and reposting almost 1,000 stories from the last 8 years made me weep.
I know some people just don't want their stuff on Dreamwidth for whatever reason and I'm not trying to invalidate anyone's views on that by any means. However, I am asking that you view this in the light of three things:
- the dreamwidth comm is a backup of the LJ one and at the moment, it's just going to stay a backup (we may try to cross post in future as the fest goes live if people are interested, but at the moment it's more an 'omg!' thing);
- it was an emergency; and
- this isn't a normal 'you post links to your fic' comm - every story on this community was written and posted for someone else, and your recipient risked losing access to the stories written for them.
That being said, please let me know if you would like anything deleted from the backup site. At the moment, the options to import are basically 'everything' or 'nothing', so your request posts as well as your stories are also mirrored, but I certainly don't have any objection to deleting old requests. I may do that anyway to tidy up the backup, but I haven't decided yet (and it depends on how much work that would be as well). However, I would ask that you think twice before requesting that we delete stories, though, for the reasons I've already mentioned.
Your comments are also mirrored, so that authors won't lose any of their lovely feedback, but again I can delete those if you would like (and again, I would ask that you think twice before requesting deletion, since they were nice comments left for someone else).
Alternatively, you can sign into Dreamwidth using your LJ account as an open-ID and delete comments and signup posts yourself :) They will have imported as linked to your LJ account, so you will have the ability to delete them once you've signed in with your LJ account (just make sure you sign in using the openID option using your LJ credentials, not sign into your own Dreamwidth account or try to sign into a Dreamwidth account with your LJ credentials).
(ETA: The import has now successfully completed, but it seems that some of the comments (but not all of them and not entries as far as I can see) are mapping to your Dreamwidth account if you're already over there. But not for everyone - mine are mapping to my LJ account despite me having a dreamwidth account, but some other comments on the same post that were originally made by the LJ account are showing as having been made by a dreamwidth account. I don't know why, but whatever the reason you should be able to delete using either open ID for the ones that are showing as made by your LJ account or your dreamwidth account if it's mapped to there.
ETA2: Apparently you can opt on Dreamwidth to have your LJ links automatically link to your Dreamwidth account on any imported material instead. Here's the DW FAQ for it. Thanks to trobadora for the link.)
You won't be able to delete your stories yourself as they were posted under the Admin account and not by you, but that's no different from the way that it works on this community.
I think that's everything, but given that today also involved a migraine and having to sleep it off, I can't guarantee I haven't missed anything important.
As always, you can ask anything in the comments, or PM us or send us an e-mail to sgasanta @ gmail.com if you'd rather comment privately. However, please note that any hate mail will be deleted and not replied to.
ETA3: New comm on Dreamwidth is at sga_santa
