Title: Never Quite What You Expect
Author: propinquitine
Recipient: monanotlisa
Pairing: John/Rodney
Rating: PG
Word Count: ~7400
Author's Notes: I threw a number of monanotlisa's requests at the wall, and "twisted cliches", "banter", and "humor" stuck the fastest. Hope you enjoy it!
Major thanks to M. and winkingstar as always for cheerleading and betaing down to the wire.
Summary: The problem with most of the ways it could happen is that the scenarios aren't nearly awkward enough.

I really enjoyed this... your take on the clichés, the banter, and the humor and everything. :)

Oh, and I love how you write Teyla.

Teyla rolled her eyes and stood up. "Talk to him, John." She smiled at him, only a little pityingly. "I understand that it's a disquieting prospect, but really, the two of you are the only ones who will be able to sort this out."

All the voices are great. And it was nice to see Keras mentioned again.

[eta: and it's just as good on second reading! I could even better appreciate the structure and all the detail you put into it. Okay, I'll stop spamming now...]

Thank you so much! I really enjoyed writing Teyla's snark and humor in this, so I'm happy to hear it worked for you, too. Glad you enjoyed it (enough for a re-read, even! \0/)!

This is just great. I love the contrast between all the tropes and "reality", with their awkward dorkish caring evident throughout. And John thinking Teyla's suspicion is ridiculous in part because he just hadn't thought of it, and Teyla declining to be the matchmaker, and Rodney suddenly putting the repression pieces together — perfect!

Thank you! "Awkward dorkish caring" is such a good way of putting it -- exactly what I was going for! Glad you enjoyed it. :-)

Hahaha that is so John to do everything backwards (I half suspect he asked Nancy to marry him before they'd ever been on a date). Brilliant fic!

Psh, doing things in the sense-making order takes all the fun out of it. ;-) Glad you enjoyed it!

I love this whole thing for being anti-cliche, but mainly for the way you don't write Keller as suddenly losing all her actual personality and wanting to go back to Earth for no reason, or Teyla for having spent years worrying about John and Rodney's relationship and coaching John on how to sort it out. It's a rare but wonderful thing :o)

Thank you! I definitely wanted to give Keller a fair deal in this, and can totally envision her feeling very protective of her entire-galaxy's worth of patients. I'm glad to hear that characterization worked for you, as well!

Hee, yes, this is several thousand words of cliché-dismantling in pursuit of the biggest cliché of all: John and Rodney being totally in love. (And awkward about it. :D) I'm so glad you liked it, particularly since the cliche_bingo masterlist was absolutely invaluable to me while writing this. So thank you for that amazing resource!

This was so much fun. I loved Teyla refusing to play matchmaker! And Rodney's laser, and Rodney and John's great conversation at the end. At least they understand each other.... "You're good weird" - be still my beating heart - what a declaration ;)

They're big on romantic declarations, these guys. ;-) I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Excellent story! Twisted cliche's indeed, with everything not working out the way we frequently see it in fanfic. But they got there in the end, with almost NO help from Teyla--LOL

Rodney gestured at him, "All of it, every single thing someone could want, and you're not using it, no one gets to enjoy it."
"You think someone should be enjoying me," John said, eyebrows up to his hairline.

Soooooo funny. And yet, I can certainly understand Rodney's complaint!

the summary is really apt! I liked the juxtaposition of the fandom cliches with the awkward, awkward "real" John & Rodney. Such a funny & clever fic!

Thank you! I had a ball coming up with the awkward takes on beloved clichés (all while realizing that "they are really awkward" is something of a cliché in its own right). I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

So much fun :) All those lovely possible scenarios and it's the one where they talk to each other (without yentas or scripts! that works! Awesome :)

This is fantastic! I love the more realistic getting-together fics and this one has the sweet and funny, too! (I adore Rodney and his giant laser). This will definitely go on my list of re-readable fics.
