So This Is Christmas

Checking his tray John searched for some space left somewhere on it to put the cutlery down. The small thing was overstuffed with plates, filled glasses, and dishes - it looked like the Colonel hadn't eaten in weeks and was now eager to catch up.

John shrugged, and then decided that maybe he could collect some spoons and forks later. Ignoring the baffled looks he received from the people he passed, he carefully carried the heavy tray to a table in the dining hall of the Daedalus.

He greeted the occupants with a smile and sat down.

Ronon and Elizabeth both watched him and the tray with an amused expression. John just rolled his eyes slightly and started to carefully arrange dishes and glasses on the table.

"This was your idea, too," John said to Elizabeth, who just had raised her mug to her lips to take a sip. "So - you might as well start explaining, while I'm busy preparing everything."

With these words he continued, putting on his this-has-to-be-done-by-someone-face (as though) to emphasize the importance of his task. But naah... he couldn't quite suppress the smile that grew wider by the minute.

Elizabeth watched the grin on the man's face, and was smiling as she shook her head. Then she turned to Ronon who sat across them, just to be greeted with a raised eyebrow directed at both her and John.

Elizabeth could only guess what the alien warrior had to be thinking that moment. Nudging one of the smaller dishes in front of her with her finger she briefly watched the content moving in shaking motions, then looked up at Ronon again who eyed the dish a little bit longer and then looked up.

"Well," Elizabeth spoke up, "as you have been invited to join us on our journey to Earth and as a special time of the year is celebrated in our home country, the colonel and I thought we might introduce you to some local traditions." She expectantly looked at Ronon; ready to answer the questions he might want to ask right now.

Ronon kept watching her and the colonel's work without speaking up.

She should have expected that. He wasn't one to talk too much; he'd rather listen first and ask questions later.

John, who had finished his decorational work with lighting a small tea light candle, finally spoke up. "Well, when we're going to arrive on Earth in a few hours there will be a small...," he stopped himself as he searched for the appropriate word.

"Reception," said Elizabeth at the same time as John had decided on the word "Party."

Slightly surprised they looked at each other.

"Something in between," John said. "First there will be a reception, for you as our alien ally of course, and then it will hopefully extend to a party," he elaborated, looking meaningfully at Elizabeth. "I know what USAF Christmas parties are like, believe me," he added, his face expressing the seriousness of his words.

"I believe you." The diplomat nodded, smiling into her cup of coffee.

"So, you will have your first Christmas party ever," John cheerfully said to Ronon and nudged a plate and a glass in front of the warrior.

"There will be lots of food and drink, and music and dance, and even more drinks... Luckily the Daedalus has brought many Christmas-y foods to Pegasus for the people who can't go home over the holidays, so maybe you want to try some of this," he gestured at the plate, before remembering that they still had no spoons and forks.

Yet, before he could go to fetch some, Ronon had snatched a huge piece of the tart on the plate with his fingers and had popped it into his mouth. Now he was munching on it, grinning at John and Elizabeth's mildly surprised expressions.

John was the first to react. "Good?"

As an answer, Ronon grinning took another piece of the tart, put it into his mouth and chewed. Then he took the glass John had placed near him, eyed the yellowish, viscous content, sniffed at it and took a mouthful.

"Maybe you should be a bit careful with tha--," Elizabeth could be heard, but it was already too late.

With a loud noise Ronon spat the stuff onto the floor. He looked disgusted at the content of the glass, and then he looked irritated at Elizabeth and John.

"Your people like to drink that?" he asked, then wiped his mouth and took another bite of the tart as if he wanted to cover the disgusting taste of the drink.

John took his own glass and sipped. It tasted fine.

"Yes, we do," Elizabeth answered. "It's called eggnog. The main ingredients are eggs, cream and alcohol," she added smilingly.

Ronon looked doubtfully at her, but said nothing.

"I like it very much," John said in a defensive tone and then took another dish and placed it between the three of them.

"This is Christmas chocolate pudding," he explained, dipped one finger into the gooey mass and put the finger into his mouth.

Elizabeth was the next to finger-eat some of the pudding. She savoured the sweet taste of it and smiled.

"Mmmmh..." She sighed happily. "My two favourites - chocolate and vanilla."

Ronon watched the two earthlings and then eyed the pudding. Sweet wasn't exactly a taste he savoured often. It had held no place in his diet as a runner, and he wasn't used to it. But these people seemed to be kind of... dependent on various kinds of sweet nutrition.

Reluctantly he dipped the tip of one finger into the sticky mass and carefully licked it off.

Slowly, his lips formed a smile around his finger. Elizabeth and John, who had watched him tasting the sweet treat, started to smile in return. As Ronon indulged in eating more of the pudding with his fingers, John took his glass with the eggnog and clanked it against Ronon's glass and against Elizabeth's mug.

"So this is Christmas!" He cheerfully said and took another mouthful.

Maybe Christmas was the reason for the speed with which the crewmembers of the Daedalus hurried to leave the ship.

Ronon let them rush past him. He didn't know anyone out there, and he didn't know what to expect.

Elizabeth caught up with him. They walked together in silence and at ease, watching the joyful people.

They reached the location from where the crew was beamed into the SGC base.

Elizabeth took a stand next to the alien warrior. Before it was their turn to be beamed she turned to Ronon.

"Do you know who General Jack O'Neill is?"

Ronon shook his head. "No."

Elizabeth smiled and leant in conspiratorially. "Beware of him - he likes to test if the new alien visitors can hold their drink."
